Biography
Polish clarinetitst and conductor Jan Jakub Bokun has appeared through most european countries, USA, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, Japan, China, Chile and Argentina.
He studied the clarinet with Mieczys³aw Stachura at the Wroc³aw Academy of Music (diploma with distinction in 1997) and continued his studies with Guy Dangain at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. In May 2001 he received the Master of Music in Conducting degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he studied with Larry Livingston and John Barnett. In the same year he was awarded a fellowship to the American Academy for Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival, where his principal teachers were David Zinman, Jorma Panula and David Robertson. The following Summer he received a scholarship which enabled him to study with Kurt Masur and James Levine at Verbier Academy in Switzerland.
As a conductor Jan Jakub Bokun has appeared with many polish chamber and symphonic ensembles, including the Wratislavia, Ricordanza, Elblag, Radom and S³upsk Chamber Orchestras, Szczecin´s Camerata Nova, Wroc³aw, Bia³ystok, Bydgoszcz, Kielce, P³ock, Kalisz, Olsztyn, Lublin, Koszalin, Jelenia Góra, Baltic and Sudettic Philharmonic Orchestras in Poland, the Martinu Filharmonie Zlin, Èeske Budejovice Chamber Philharmonic and the Moravian Philharmonic in Olomouc in the Czech Republic. In February 2010 Bokun made his debut with the Prague Philharmonia.
He has won prizes, as both soloist and chamber musician, at competitions in Wroc³aw, W³oszakowice, Enschede and Mt. Pleasant. He was a prizewinner at the Third Witold Lutoslawski Conducting Competition in Bia³ystok, Poland, where he also received the Orchestra Award. He has perfected his skills at numerous master classes given by such outstanding artists as Sergiu Celibidache, Michael Stern, Philippe Cuper, Guy Deplus, Walter Boeykens, Michael Collins, Béla Kovacs i Peter-Marc Dijcks.
Three times - in Ostend, Stockholm and Tokio he was the Polish representative at the World Clarinet Congress Clarinetfest. He has been invited to give masterclasses in Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Spain, Serbia and at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels.
His honours include a prize of the Foundation of Polish Culture, the Jan Adolf Górecki Scholarship and grants from the Polish Ministry of Culture and the French Government.
In 1999 he was engaged by Krystian Zimerman for his Polish Festival Orchestra, performing in many prestigious venues, including the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and New York´s Carnegie Hall. The orchestra also made a recording for Deutsche Grammophon.
Mr. Bokun has recorded for Polish Radio and TV, the International Clarinet Association and the Koch Classics and Dux labels. His debut CD, From the Shadow to the Light, was released in 1999 by Koch Classics and greeted with great critical acclaim. His second album, Duo Guitarinet, has been nominated for the Polish Music Industry Fryderyk 2000 Award. The third CD, Hommage a Carlos Guastavino, was recorded with the outstanding Polish pianist Wojciech Kocyan in 2001. Regreso al Sur and Il Convegno (Dux) were followed by Consortium Musicum, Duo Guitarinet-10th Anniversary Album, Impresiones Argentinas, Jan Jakub Bokun LIVE and Clarinettino- all released on JBRecords.
Since 2001 Jan Jakub Bokun has taught clarinet and chamber music at the Wroc³aw Academy of Music.
